The History of Bruces Browser

Bruces Drug Store c.1938Bruce’s Pharmacy was the last surviving independent pharmacy in Athol. In recent history, it was predeceased by Clark’s Drug store, Athol Drug (Liggett’s), and Ray’s Pharmacy. (We're happy to announce that a new independent pharmacy has recently joined the community to keep that indie spirit alive.)

Bruce’s Browser came into existence on Dec 1, 2004 and held its grand opening celebration in February 2005. It is the new incarnation of Bruce’s Pharmacy, which had been part of the Athol landscape for many years. Current owner, Diane Lincoln, grew up at the pharmacy, which was owned by her family since 1948.

It’s name came from previous owner, F. Leon Bruce.

Bruce’s was formerly located in the space that the uptown branch of the Athol Savings Bank now occupies.  It then relocated next door, replacing an A&P grocery store, in 1958.

Diane graduated from pharmacy school in 1970 and became instrumental in remodeling and expanding Bruce’s into the space that was once Rene’s Variety Store (now Larry’s Variety, which moved to the corner of the same building) in 1971.

Bruce’s Browser retains the soda fountain, card department, gift department, and magazines that were longstanding features of the pharmacy.  It also retains a commitment to be a vital part of the North Quabbin community.
